Cattleya Orchid Hybrid Plants

 

 

The name of Cattleya orchids come from William Cattley

He started in the early 19th Century with some hybrids from sent to him among other plants from Brazil.

There was a bulb amongst the packing material, and he nurture it in his greenhouse to see if anything will come out, the gorgeous flower was the result and that has grown to countless variants.

The earliest hybrid was the cattleya labiata. Today they are probably the most popular orchid plant. In a real application, the size of this flower is very suitable for corsages.

The plants have a large flowers, up to around 10 cm diameter, sometimes even more. Most blossom once per year and the flowers last about up to 3 weeks, this depends on various parameters.

New hybrid plants are grown today

which last longer and bloom even twice per year its depends on various factors and the genes of flower grown in the lab. Hybrids now are bred for more frequent blooming and show flower for up to 5 -6 weeks. It seems they are easier to grow for hobbyist who don't have a greenhouse.

As you can see at the photos here, also the hybrids have great colors. They have a relatively short bloom cycle, take a few and you always will have great colors in the house. No need to care very much but if you are after fragrant flowers, there is no fragrant. A interesting variation to the common cattleya are miniature versions. There are also silk orchids actually some of them are so perfectly made, its difficult to see a difference to the real plant unless you touch it, the colors and the compositions are real beautiful.

are probably the easiest to care for and like all plants need water, light and fertilizer. Most of the wild plants grow in the rain forests of South America.

Wild plants grow in the Andes Mountains from altitudes near sea level to up to about 3000 meters.

This plants are epiphytes or air plants, means they need humidity and light to grow. Actually they are also grown quite easy and with great success in the tropical garden as a hybrid in Thailand.

To check if a plant needs water put your finger into the potting material, if the finger comes out dry it needs watering. When watering  the water should be able to flow towards the plant and then drain right out into the sink.

They come in different colors such as pink, purple, white, yellow, violet and sometimes a blend of this colors. Growing this type of flower is also not so difficult, you can buy a flask from the internet grow the plant as indicated, repot the flower from time to time and have a pleasant visual impression every day.
