Cattleya orchids have been named after William Cattley in the early 19th century.

He was credited with starting some hybrids from orchids sent to him as packing material from Brazil. There was a kind of bulb amongst the packing material, and he nurture it in his greenhouse to see if anything will come out. The gorgeous cattleya orchid flower was the result.
